Fall Run Stripers Now in the Upper Bay

John Keeler, Bill Tucker, and I had planned to fish on Wednesday, 11/06/13 this week. Fortunately John checked the weather early Tuesday morning and advised us that Tuesday would be the best day weather wise to fish this week.  Everyone agreed so we met at my boat to fish the Chesapeake Bay.

We started fishing for white perch first thing.  I had located a large school of these delicious fish earlier in the week and they were still there when we arrived.

After loading up on pan fish it was time to get serious and look for some big stripers.  Until now I haven't seen any of the migrating large stripers that normally come up in the Maryland Sector of the Chesapeake Bay by around mid October.  While cruising over waters that broke swiftly from 15 feet to 24 feet and then to 59 feet, a beautiful sight came on my sonar screen.

A Large School of Menhaden

With big bait around there is a good chance that there are some big stripers close by.  It wasn't long before we sighted some large birds working the water.  With everyone seated the throttles went down as far as possible.  Just before moving into the middle of the birds, the throttles went in neutral the motors were turned off and we drifted within 10 fee of the working birds.

What a sight to see...a big school of large striped bass busting and chasing menhaden out of the water.  At 2:48pm on the first cast we had a triple hook-up of fish between 24 and 34 inches.  This went on from time to time until sunset.  We had caught 18 healthy and fat stripers before leaving the water at sunset.  This was a trip for the books.
