Catching 3 Days Straight!

Bryant Griffin and John Filipe drove down from Rochester, New York, and we met at Sandy Point State Park last Tuesday. During the next 3 days we planned to fish the Upper and Middle Chesapeake Bay.

Our plan was to catch as many striped bass as possible during their stay in Annapolis, MD. Last Tuesday we did more catching than fishing. Bryant and John started catching stripers on topwater under birds from Hacketts Point to Thomas Point. Other species caught that day were; bluefish, weakfish, and shad.

Wednesday started out slow as we launched at Rod N' Reel West and headed northeast to catch the maximum flow on the ebb current at the southwest end of Poplar Island. There were no birds working, or fish, on structures so we headed for Sharps Island shoal.  We found no active stripers there. We kept moving to the Choptank River Entrance Buoy R"4". We got on some birds and some better fish in the 17" plus class. After 2 productive drifts the fish moved off the hump. Our next move was into the Choptank to check between R"10" and R"12A", and again no birds, and no fish on structures. There were some watermen live lining spot on the false channel so we put on 4" Tsunami Soft Swim Baits and jigged them while drifting between the live liners.

A couple of keepers were landed, along with a 19" bluefish. The fish were suspended and 20 foot deep. This meant that the lure had to be placed just above the fish, and then it had to jigged from 9 o'clock to 9:30 o'clock before the fish would take it. If you are ever around live liners, this technique can be highly productive.

Thursday was just like Tuesday, catching stripers all day long using topwater lures and jigging Specialized Baits Li'l Bunker spoons with clouser teasers.

Thank you Bryant and John for allowing me to join your fishing trips last week.

NOTE: This is an excellent time to have your chartplotter/fishfinder setup for the future.
