No Doubt Striped Bass Still Around

Happy New Year! I wish you calm seas and good fishing throughout 2016.

Billy Mellendick, Doug Schopman, and I enjoyed an excellent day fishing on Sunday, January 3, 2016. We knew that there were still plenty of nice size stripers available on the Maryland/Virginia line, but time was short and we decided to fish a Chesapeake Bay tributary.

Light Tackle was our choice of equipment. The productive lures were 5" ZMan, Scented Jerk ShadZ in pearl rigged, on 3/4 oz. Bass Kandy Delight jig head, along with a Specialized Bait, 2 oz. Li'l Bunker Spoon in chartreuse. The largest fish hit the ZMan.

The water temperature was 47 degrees. Look for the larger fish in waters between 30 and 40 feet at this time. Remember as the water gets colder they will go deeper. Excellent locations to look are; creek edges (where the creek enters the river), quick drop offs, piers, points, and the main channel edges.

Landed these Nice Stripers

This was the 2nd trip this year on Billy's boat and the skunk has stayed off and that's a great way to start a new year.

Most Productive Technique: On the Bottom & S L O W - Cast the lure out and let it sink to the bottom.  Keep the rod tip high at 11 o'clock and a tight line. Jig the lure at approximently every 5 seconds, with 2 short jigs, by snapping the wrist.

Fishing Tip: The water is now in the 40's so be very careful if you go out. Have a safety plan in case someone goes over the side and advise everyone aboard before leaving the dock.

Speaking Engagement: The Pasadena Sportfishing Group will meet on Monday, January 11, 2016 at Earleigh Heights Fire Hall in Severna Park. Doors open at 6:00pm and the meeting begins at 7:30pm.
